Synopsis: This species is very widespread across North America and prefers riffle-habitat in streams. While it is expanding its distribution in some colder streams, in warmer areas it is predicted to decline. This predicted decline was corroborated by our follow-up study that found Longnose Dace have declined by 20% over the past couple of decades. Because it does appear to shift its distribution in response to warming, stream connectivity (i.e., free of barriers) will be critical to prevent widespread loss.
